Benin’s Hounkpe Concedes Defeat in Presidential Election

(MENAFN) Benin’s presidential contender Paul Hounkpe has conceded defeat following preliminary indications from Sunday’s election, acknowledging that his rival, Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, is leading in the early vote count.

Hounkpe, who leads the Cowry Forces for an Emerging Benin (FCBE), said in a statement that his response reflected a commitment to democratic principles and respect for the electoral process.

He described his position as one of a “statesman committed to republican principles, respect for the popular vote and the stability” of the country, and said he was accepting “with responsibility” the emerging results.

The opposition figure also extended congratulations to Wadagni, emphasizing the importance of democratic maturity and national unity.

“Democracy requires mutual respect and rising above partisan divisions,” he said.

Hounkpe, a former culture minister, urged the incoming administration to prioritize social equity, economic inclusion, institutional reform, and national reconciliation.

He also thanked his supporters, reaffirming his continued commitment to public service and national development.

Official election results are still pending, with provisional outcomes expected on Tuesday, though early counting trends reportedly show Wadagni in the lead, according to statements cited in reports.
