Benin's Vote Count Phase Underway

(MENAFN) Vote tallying is now underway in Benin following the close of polling stations Sunday in the country's first-round presidential election, as reported by correspondents on the ground in Cotonou, the West African nation's economic hub.

Polling stations across the country operated from 7 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) before shutting their doors at 4 p.m. (1500 GMT), in strict accordance with the nation's electoral code — triggering the immediate launch of the counting process.

Sacca Lafia, president of the Autonomous National Electoral Commission — the body mandated with overseeing Benin's elections — offered a timeline for preliminary results, saying: "The general trends of this election will be announced within 48 hours after the closure of polling stations."

Nearly 7.9 million registered voters participated in the ballot, tasked with selecting a successor to incumbent President Patrice Talon, whose mandate is set to expire on May 23.

The contest featured two presidential tickets: Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, running alongside Mariam Chabi Talata under the banner of the ruling coalition, and opposition duo Paul Hounkpe and Rock Hounwanou, representing the Cowry Forces for an Emerging Benin party.
